In commemoration of World Mental Health Awareness, Lions International District 404B2 Nigeria, in partnership with Arogi Trauma Care Foundation, held a well-attended program titled “Understanding Depression and Anxiety Disorders: Breaking the Silence” on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Ologba Palace Square, Ogba, Lagos.
The event put together by Lion Dr. Folashade Afolabi, District Chairperson for Mental Health Awareness and her committee, brought together health professionals, community leaders, and members of the public to discuss the growing concern of depression and anxiety in society.
During her opening remarks, District Governor Lion Oluwakemi Eribake, MJF, NLCF, emphasized that mental health is an essential aspect of total well-being, yet often neglected due to stigma and lack of awareness. She noted that recent statistics show that over 29% of Nigerians experience symptoms of depression or anxiety at some point in their lives, highlighting the urgent need for early intervention and community education.
Guest speaker Adedeji Odusanya, Program Director of Arogi Trauma Care Foundation, gave an insightful lecture on understanding the signs, causes, and management of depression and anxiety disorders. He emphasized that breaking the silence around mental illness can save lives, as many individuals suffer in isolation due to shame or misinformation.
Also speaking, Mrs. Nurat Olanrewaju Ajetunmobi, Assistant Director of Nursing Services at LASUTH, stressed the importance of seeking professional help and maintaining a supportive environment for those struggling with mental health challenges.
In addition to the lectures, participants benefited from free medical screenings, including blood pressure testing and diabetes screening, conducted by qualified health professionals. The initiative aimed to promote holistic health by addressing both physical and mental wellness.
A highlight of the event was the recognition and decoration of community leaders, including The Ologba of Ogba and his wife, as well as the Community Development Association (CDA) Chairman, who were each presented with the District Governor’s Service Year Pin in appreciation of their support and commitment to community service.
The program concluded with an appeal for continuous awareness campaigns, as mental health remains a vital component of a healthy society. Participants expressed gratitude to Lions District 404B2 and Arogi Trauma Care Foundation for their dedication to promoting wellness through education, service, and compassion.
“Real Service, Committed to Serve,” the District Governor affirmed, as the Lions once again demonstrated our mission of uplifting communities through impactful humanitarian action.
