In July 2025, the Lagos British Lions Club successfully carried out a comprehensive Health Awareness and Community Support Project at a Community Health Centre, reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian service and improved healthcare delivery at the grassroots level. The impactful outreach focused on strengthening maternal and child health services, while also addressing nutrition and welfare needs of nursing mothers.
As part of the project, the Club donated a range of essential pediatric and medical items aimed at improving service delivery at the health facility. These items included weighing scales, thermometers, mattresses, chairs, baby diapers, and baby wipes. The donations were carefully selected to meet the immediate needs of the health center and to enhance comfort and care for expectant and nursing mothers.
Beyond medical support, the Club also carried out a hunger-relief initiative, distributing food essentials to nursing mothers. This intervention was designed to promote proper nutrition, aid recovery after childbirth, and support the overall well-being of mothers and their infants recognizing the critical link between nutrition and maternal health outcomes.
The initiative was particularly significant given the challenges facing maternal and child healthcare in Nigeria. The country continues to bear one of the heaviest burdens of maternal and infant mortality globally, largely due to limited access to basic healthcare facilities, inadequate equipment, and poor nutrition. Many primary health centers across the nation struggle with shortages of hospital beds, mattresses, and other essential medical infrastructure, gaps that directly affect the quality of care provided to women in labour and newborns.
Management of the Community Health Centre expressed profound appreciation to the Lagos British Lions Club, noting that the facility lacked several basic amenities such as hospital beds, mattresses, and drip stands prior to the intervention. According to the health center leadership, the donated items would significantly improve their capacity to accommodate more women in labour, monitor infant growth effectively, and deliver safer and more efficient healthcare services.
Some of the nursing mothers also shared heartfelt gratitude. One beneficiary remarked that the support came at a critical time, easing the financial burden of childcare essentials and giving them renewed hope and confidence in the care received at the center. Another mother described the outreach as “a blessing that shows we are not forgotten,” emphasizing how the food items and baby supplies made a meaningful difference to her family.
Lagos British Lions Club was widely commended for its compassion, foresight, and dedication to community service. The project not only addressed immediate healthcare needs but also raised awareness about the importance of maternal and child health, nutrition, and community support systems.
Through strategic intervention, empathy, and partnership with local health facilities, Lagos British Lions Club continues to make lasting impacts, saving lives, restoring dignity, and strengthening communities through meticulous service delivery.
